The LiceMeister comb is the only comb endorsed by the National Pediculosis Association. $15.95
Dr. Hauschka Neem Hair Oil, $39.95
Ah....Lice. All we can say is don't panic. They are actually very easily dealt with. You just need patience and a good quality lice comb. If you suspect your kids have lice, just run the comb through their hair to find out for certain. If you find lice you will want to work section by section, carefully combing through small amounts of wet hair with the comb as close to the scalp as possible. If you can still see any nits afterward (tiny white tear drop shapes on the hair shafts close to the scalp) you can scrape them off with a finger nail. Once you have done this initial, careful combing of the whole head you will want to repeat again every two or three days for two weeks to catch the whole lousy life cycle. This is a much better, more reliable, and safer option than using chemical treatments which are toxic and do not kill nits. Once you've gotten rid of the bugs, you should run a lice comb through your kids' hair weekly just to check, as a preventative measure.
Complementing the combing sessions with applications of Dr. Hauschka's Neem Hair Oil can also help deter lice.
For more than you ever wanted to know about lice and their speedy removal, including instructional videos, you can go to www.headlice.org.
If you want someone to come to your house to give you a tutorial in person and/or do the combing for you, the Hair Angels are an excellent local company. This is the company that performs the lice checks at our school. You can find them at www.thehairangels.com
And by the way, The Hair Angels do not recommend going overboard with washing everything in your house multiple times. Some light vacuuming of sofas, and a wash of the bedding with the first combing should be sufficient in most cases, as lice cannot survive long away from their food source....the human head! Ewww!
