The Apple Cake, by Nienke van Hichtum, is the story of an old woman who craves an apple cake. She has everything she needs to make one, except apples and sets off in search of some, with a basket of plums to trade. This book is one of my kids' favorites as the old woman is rewarded not only for her generosity and compassion, but also for her determination. It's perfect for apple picking season, and includes a luscious, old fashioned recipe for the same apple cake that is the old woman's final reward. For children age 4 and up.
